When syllogisms fail

May 22, 2007 on 10:49 am | In Philosophy, Psychology |

In my statistics book (Discovering Statistcs with SPSS) by Andy Field, Andy tries to demonstrate logic, specifically the rejection of the null hypothesis, with the help of a syllogism:

If a man has no arms he can’t play guitar.
This man plays the guitar.
Therefore, this man has arms.

Unfortunately, statistics is all about likelihoods. :-D
